The visual research is the analysis of an established term “documentary film” from the visual point of view. The research is built on the principle of metaphorical formation, which plays a special role in design and art. The author researched and classified materials about documentary cinematography theory, systematized quotations of famous movie critics, directors, and other professionals working in the film industry, collected different visual and text-based materials, compared and contrasted them to her own artistic images and associations. The utilization of such metaphorical approach in design allows to simplify the theory of documentary cinematography phenomenon, develop the obtained theoretical framework, and, in the result, in conjunction with practical tools solve the creative task in an unconventional and versatile way.
