Year of Graduation: 2020

Since the fall of bipolar international system violence towards civilians during armed conflicts has become unstoppable in most of North and West African countries despite the major effort of international community to fight these events via humanitarian interventions and peace-building exercises. The reason of such failure could lie in the lack of research addressing the issue as a whole-region and multi-actor phenomenon in contemporary academia. Focusing on the conflicts in Algeria, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Burkina Faso this study aims to define the state and non-state actors of violence, their means and, most importantly, factors contributing to this political culture prosperity in the area. In order to reach the purpose set, a comparative and historic case study analysis was carried out. This study introduces an original classification of violence factors, according to which international community could adopt more efficient counter-measures to combat violence in North and West Africa.
