The Specifics of International Cooperation in the Arctic in the 21st Century

The Arctic region is becoming an important actor in the international arena and is representing a great interest to the world community as it accumulates a huge amount of energy resources necessary for the development of various spheres of social life. Many countries are concerned about having an influence in the Arctic region due to the wealth of natural resources located on its territory, the ability to transport these resources and other minerals, and to create new sea and transport routes. This paper analyses the specifics of international cooperation in the development of this region, its legal basis and influencing factors. Within the topic, the object of study will be not only official Arctic powers and subarctic states but also non-Arctic states, which include East Asian countries.
