Particularities of the Concept of Greatpowerness in Russian and American Contemporary Political Discourse

Year of Graduation: 2020

The clash of great power ambitions of the United States and Russia has become more obvious in the recent years, resulting in what many researchers are calling “Cold War 2.0” (Wintour, Harding & Borger, 2016). This stimulated the surge in the academic interest in the Russian understanding of greatpowerness, especially among Western scholars (Oldberg, 2016; Smith, 2014, 2019). However, no published works to date seem to have compared the concepts of greatpowerness in the American and Russian political discourse. Therefore, this study aims to extend this line of research while adopting the constructivist paradigm of international relations. The research design will be based on a combination of content analysis and discourse analysis. Our study will contribute to the theoretical approach to the notion of greatpowerness in different states. Moreover, we will attempt to eliminate the gap between the comprehension of greatpowerness of Russian and American policymakers that is impeding their mutual understanding.
