This work is devoted to the study of factors affecting the formation of the investment potential of Russian regions. The identification of drivers of regional economies is especially significant now, since the problem of uneven and heterogeneous economic development is acute in Russia. The concentration of economic power in isolated regions and the lag of others - this is today's reality for Russia. Overcoming regional economic inequality is one of the urgent challenges facing the current government. The research includes three chapters. The first chapter highlights ways of assessing investment potential, also provides a system of indicators involved in the analysis throughout the research. In the second chapter, the dependence of the studied indicator on the social and economic characteristics of the regions is determined. The third chapter is devoted to the division of subjects into clusters, taking into account regional differences and similarities. In the course of the work, key growth factors will be obtained that can help determine the production specialization of the regions, rank them and divide them into clusters, taking into account the identified patterns of development.
