ASEAN and Terrorism in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia has always been affected by the movement of anti-Western radical Muslim groups and the war against terrorism in the USA. Many terrorist attacks in the Southeast Asian region have been identified as having terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiyah (JI). These movements can threaten national security, leading to retaliation from various states in the region and causing changes in the structure of security cooperation between states in Southeast Asia. The term Terrorism remains controversial and is understood in various meanings. However, it is recognized as non-traditional security that is extremely violent. Terrorist attacks also challenge the ability of governments as a national threat which can undermine state sovereignty. This dissertation aims to explore threats which are caused by transnational terrorist movements that affect security cooperation in Southeast Asia; analyze mechanisms and strategies of Southeast Asian countries to deal with terrorism, elements that promote and obstruct multilateral security cooperation in anti-transnational terrorism in Southeast Asia; the trends of a collaboration in Southeast Asia in the future against an ongoing terrorist attacks. Furthermore, the future of international cooperation will be discussed and analyzed
