Modal values of obligation in Japanese

The purpose of the study is to explore the modal values of obligation in Japanese. The material got at the end of the research can be used to systemize the information about the obligation modality. After the analysis of grammatical construction (markers of deontic necessity) different sources of the imposition of obligation are identified. According to the origins of compulsion the modal values are distinguished. They are a normative obligation caused by social norms and commitments, a necessity because of external circumstances or objective laws and impossibility to avoid an action under the pressure of emotions. The results of the study can be used either in the teaching profession or in the translation practice to employ the grammatical constructions correctly.
