Modern technologies have changed our understanding of privacy and personal space. In online mode, individuals leave a huge array of personal data, which is constantly exposed to threats. Legal protection measures are not proportional to the level of constantly developing digital technologies. At the moment, there is a need to protect personal data on the Internet in Russia, taking into account the specifics of digital technologies, the interests of personal data subjects and businesses. In the course of the research, theoretical and practical problems were found: the lack of a uniform understanding of «personal data», obtaining the consent of the personal data subject, the inability to implement the principle of limiting the processing of personal data to predetermined goals, reducing the effectiveness of the procedure for depersonalization of personal data, the lack of an effective private-legal method for protecting personal data. The conducted research on the problems of personal data protection on the Internet allowed us to establish a generally accepted approach to the legal nature of personal data, identify solutions to problems in the implementation of the rights and obligations of participants in legal relations in the field of personal data, as well as find an effective private legal method for protecting personal data.
