Year of Graduation: 2020

This study is a development of the short animated film “Gonzo”. According to the plot of the cartoon, the main character stops an endless war with the help of a singing shawarma. The film reveals the topic of the meaninglessness of war using the Arab-Israeli conflict as a reference. This conflict was an inspiration for the author of the project. This is a controversial topic, and the author takes a neutral position in this study. According to the author, the theme of war in the animation has not covered well enough. The author covers this topic in a visual study, "Representation of War in Animation from the 40s to the Present in the USA, Russia, and Japan." This visual study is devoted to the research of the representation of war in the animation of different countries, visual and stylistic techniques used in famous films. The study showed that an integral part of the war is not only military equipment and battle scenes, but also a strict compositional rhythm and red color. This study helped to create a cartoon that uses the most modern cinematic language. Work on the project consisted of several stages: a collection of animated references, work on visual research, script, storyboard and animation. The last stage is sound for the cartoon, it needs a final song. As a result, “Gonzo” is a five minute comedic cartoon. It has rather harsh humor, suitable for teenage and adult audiences. The project used colors that are not typical for military cartoons, the emphasis is not on hostilities, but on friendship and love.
