The study answers on the following research questions “Why are innovations poorly implied in the heavy transportation sector in Russia?” and “What should be done to modernize Russia's fleet in order to respond to the opportunities and challenges?” To answer these questions interviews with one of leading freight transportation company in Russia was made. Furthermore, the company serves as a case study to show the difficulties and opportunities for innovations in the sector. The results of the study show that innovations in the sphere of transport turnover in Russia are due to poorly developed factors such as technological, economic and state ones. Other factors include the level of competition, as well as historical factors influencing the creation of a market in Russia.
