There is direct policy relevance in understanding the inter- and intra-firm technology diffusion mechanisms, given there is ongoing fourth industrial revolution. Yet relevant empirical evidence continues to be scarce, so we expect to add to existing knowledge by proposing a two-step research model to study advanced technology dissemination patterns and respective inter- and intra-firm determinants. Using data from the Monitoring of Innovation Activity 2014, we identify three classes of firms: advanced technology adopters, moderate adopters and non-adopters. We also show that competitive pressure increases the probability of successful inter- and intra-firm technology diffusion, while firm size helps companies to first adopt the technologies, but slows further implementation. Our results should be of particular interest to public policymakers as they provide insights for further discussions on motivation of Russian companies to upgrade their production facilities and ease the shift to Industry 4.0.
