Over the past five hundred years, traditional resources have been actively used as energy sources: coal, oil, gas. However, in practice it was found that these sources are “dirty” and negatively affect the state of the environment. Another drawback was their limited nature and uneven distribution over the Earth's surface. Because of these factors, trends in the development of the energy sector have changed dramatically in recent years. More attention has been paid to energy sources (wind, sunlight, tides, biofuels), which are renewable and “clean” and do not cause environmental damage. Alternative energy is not only a way out of the current situation with pollution of the planet and depletion of resources but also a sector of interest to investors and a job creator. Nearly all countries have discovered the benefits of supporting and developing renewable energy sources, especially the countries of the European Union. This paper focuses on renewable energy, which contributes to the sustainable development of Spain. The work is aimed to assess the impact of renewable energy on the sustainable development of Spain. The results of the paper may reveal the potential of renewable energy technologies in Spain.
