Railway transport is the main mass cargo transport over long and medium distances. Russia's economically advantageous position contributes to the development of international relations that allow the use of transit potential in order to increase economic growth. The paper considers the theoretical possibilities of using the transit potential of Russia for freight rail transport in modern conditions, the impact of regional cooperation and existing projects on the development of the transit potential of Russia, the impact of digitalization on the level of competitiveness of railway transport in Russia. The efficiency of rail freight transport in Russia is also evaluated, recommendations are given to improve the competitiveness of the railway industry in Russia, and the possibilities of applying the European and American models of railway industry functioning in Russia are outlined.
