The Influence of Soft Power Strategy on Education in Japan

The influence of globalization on education in Japan has become more prominent than ever. In response to slow economic growth and other challenges, Japan has started focusing on international standards and recommendations in a sphere of education in order to improve its competitiveness. This research analyzes Japanese education reforms, plans and recommendations for international cooperation with other countries, which were published by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and such organizations as UNESCO and OECD. The purpose of this research is to measure the impact the soft power initiatives of the Government of Japan have on education system and international cooperation in this sphere. For this purpose, this work provides an overview of Japanese soft power strategy throughout the years and explains which role Japan plays in international and regional organizations. This research pays particular attention to Japanese education reforms associated with soft power strategy and the employment of international standards and recommendations in Japanese education system.
