The problem of domestic violence began to attract general attention in the Republic of Korea only at the end of the 20th century. However, today domestic violence is one of the most pressing issues of modern Korean society. An aggravation of this problem has led to an increase in the number of studies of domestic violence against children, the elderly and women, including emigrant women, over the past decades. Nevertheless, previous studies took into account the legal and sociological aspects of this problem, but the main attention was paid to only one type of victims, and not to the combination of such factors and the reasons for their occurrence. The purpose of this study is primarily to describe the phenomenon of domestic violence in the Republic of Korea in the 21st century; identifying the causes of domestic violence and the inherent cultural specificities of South Korea; identify mechanisms to combat domestic violence and identify prospects for the development of the situation with domestic violence in South Korea.
