In the past few years, the world has witnessed a rapid increase in the number of overseas Chinese students and scholars who migrated to China. According to the Ministry of Education of the PRC, only in 2012 more than 272,900 Chinese students returned to China. After 6 years, their number increased to 519,400. In modern Chinese society, this category of returned migrants is called “haigui”. The term is a homonym for the word "sea turtle" in Chinese and has the literal meaning of "returning from abroad." A distinctive feature of "haigui" is a high level of education, advanced knowledge and technology, language skills, and international networks. In connection with the economic recovery of China, the re-emigration of “haigui” has become a global phenomenon that attracts the interest of global media, and is also being studied by Chinese and Western scholars. The purpose of this final qualification work is to determine the role of “haigui” in the development and transformation of the national economy of the PRC, the political system, and the social structure characteristics of modern Chinese society.
