Knockout Tournaments: Game-theoretical Analysis of Strategies

The paper presents a game-theoretic analysis of the strategies of players in elimination tournaments. The model shows that there are situations in which it is beneficial for players to put a minimum of effort into victory. In addition, there are cases in which in each match of the tournament both players choose zero effort. However, the work also reflects how to achieve the maximum level of entertainment. As well as how do knockout tournaments after one defeat compares to knockout tournaments after two defeats.
