Koguryŏ's Cultural Heritage and Its Role in the Modern Korean-Chinese Relations

For years Chinese and Korean scholars have been claiming over the historical ownership of the Koguryŏ’s and Parhae’s culture. However, the lack of studies on material culture and archaeology of the Northeast Asian ancient kingdoms resulted in absence of facts regarding the relationship between Chinese, Koguryŏ’s and Parhae’s cultural heritage. This article seeks to explain whether Parhae’s and Koguryŏ’s history is a part of Chinese or Korean historical heritage, based on found material culture and archaeological studies. World-systems analysis method will be used in order to acknowledge the connection between kingdoms and the core of their culture. Historical and comparative research designs will help to identify the role of the kingdoms and understand historical processes of the Far East region.
