Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation of Student Cheating

The student cheating is a serious issue that has negative economic consequences because of discrediting the signals higher education provides. This work attempts to assess the effect of different circumstances on cheating likelihood using hypothetical scenarios method. It also investigates the interaction of these external conditions with the different intrinsic motivations of students, using three educational institutions existing within the HSE University: Faculty of Economic Sciences and the HSE-NES Joint Programme in Economics. The authors conclude that the effects of individual characteristics may be crowded out by the specific conditions of the exam that provide incentives for students to break the rules.
