Local features of a comfortable urban environment: the example of Akita (Japan) and Kolpinsky district of St. Petersburg

This paper explores the key factors in the creation of a comfortable urban environment in Japan and Russia. The safe and barrier-free pedestrian infrastructure are identified by the author as the main criteria of a comfortable urban environment. On the example of Akita and the Kolpinsky district of St. Petersburg, local features of the pedestrian infrastructure are demonstrated. One of the objectives of this study was to provide a predictive assessment of the possibility of applying the experience of Japan in Russia. Based on the results of personal observation, analysis of literature, as well as a sociological survey, the author concludes that at the moment it is not possible to fully apply the Japanese experience in Russia due to a number of factors.
