The problem of low physical activity, alongside with the prevalence of bad health habits, such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, especially among students, is very urgent nowadays for a number of countries, including Russia. The aim of this work is to study the influence of physical activity on bad health habits in a sample of Russian students in order to formulate an effective state policy in this direction if an increase in the level of physical activity reduces tobacco and alcohol dependence among young people. The study is based on panel data from the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS-HSE) from 2013 to 2018. The final sample included students aged 17 to 25 years (7,879 observations). Empirical analysis showed that physically active students are less likely to smoke and consume alcohol than those who are not involved in sports. Control variables (age, type of settlement, marital status, employment, income, religion, price of tobacco and alcohol) also had an impact on the likelihood of smoking or alcohol consumption by Russian students. The results of the study indicate the possibility of using physical activity as a tool to prevent development and reduce the level of bad habits among Russian students.
