Single-industry towns were a common phenomenon in many countries during the period of industrialization, but they were not adapted to post-industrialism. Developed countries have been creating programs to support single-industry towns for about 50 years. Developing countries, including Russia, have started doing this relatively recently. This paper presents a study of efficiency of measures to support monotowns in Russia on the basis of the analysis of the interviews conducted in monotowns, the poll among residents of monotowns and the articles in mass media. In addition, there is data collected on support measures of single-industry towns and their analogues in foreign countries and the USSR. At the end of the work, recommendations are given for improving existing measures to support monotowns in Russia and introducing new ones.
