Improving the transport system of a modern city is one of the tasks of sustainable development. Kazan is one of the most dynamically developing cities in Russia in connection with the regular holding of world events (such as World Cup, Universiade). However, the transport structure is not improving so quickly to achieve sustainability. The relevance of public transport in the city is raised in this paper. The following methods are used as research methods for this issue: questionnaire; in-depth interviews with leading experts in the transport field, ordinary employees of the city transport system; creation of different maps and regression analysis. In addition, many official documents of the city or the Republic of Tatarstan were analyzed to follow the transport agenda for the near future. Sources of data in the work are both open data and own material collected when working with residents of the city. Heat maps showed that only 48% of buildings are located within 500 m of public transport stops (compared to more than 75% recommended for cities), and also that less than a third of buildings are within walking distance of the metro (no more than 1000 m), which is noticeable reduces the effectiveness of the subway. In the paper the imperfection of the transport system was shown, recommendations are given for implementation in urban development policy.
