The author of this paper examines the tourist practices of visiting the Museum of Funeral Culture in the city of Novosibirsk and the Vvedensky Cemetery in Moscow. Considering the excursion practices of a historical object (cemetery) and a relatively new experimental project (museum), the author pays attention on how the concept of “authentic” death becomes a driver of the tourism industry. The purpose of this study is to identify the specifics of Russian thanatourism and determine how it is embedded in the tourism industry, as well as to formulate how the concept of death in modern culture affects these practices. In this regard, we believe that the study of this problem in the framework of the theory of the Experience Economy may help us understand not only the features of the current situation in Russian tourism. Death is a relevant scientific issue of modern time, developed both abroad and in Russia. Therefore, this study can contribute not only to the sociology of leisure and tourism, but also to the death studies.
