Final Grade: 10

Year of Graduation: 2020

This study examines the multilingualism of the city of Ulan-Ude (Republic of Buryatia) on the basis of 1) the linguistic landscape of the city; 2) the opinions of citizens and business owners regarding the presence in the public urban sphere of different languages and the prevalence of multilingual language practices; 3) personal observations of the author. An analysis of all these materials confirmed the existence of visual multilingualism in the urban environment which is characterized by the presence of Russian, Buryat, English, Chinese, and Mongolian languages. At the same time, the prevalence of Russian-speaking practices in the public sphere of the city was shown. Nevertheless, in recent years, practices in the Buryat language, initiated by activists, have begun to be observed, which gives a chance for bilingualism and multilingualism to establish itself in the public sphere of the city of Ulan-Ude in the future.
