Dagestan is a multinational Republic within the Russian Federation. This place is unique because there are communities of more than 40 different languages. Over the past two decades, there has been a decline in the number of native speakers of local languages due to various reasons. The research considers the factors that influenced the language shift from local languages and the transition to the widespread use of the Russian language.
