Multicultural and Internal Russian: Analysis of Successful and Failed Russian Adaptations of Foreign Teleformats

The present study aims to describe the structure of borrowing and adaptation of content ideas for other cultural and language audiences. The main objective of this study is an attempt to reveal the peculiarities of representation of teleformats in Russia and to define the main types of adaptation and their features. Examining examples of modern TV programs, the author analyzes successful and failed Russian adaptations of foreign TV formats. The author also investigates the legal issues affecting the process of adaptation of foreign formats and suggests possible ways to amend the legislation taking into account the current situation in the television industry. The empirical part of the study uses a content analysis of four successful and failed shows, as well as expert interviews with 10 respondents. Key words: television format, television format adaptation, specific features of television format adaptation, legal aspects of television format adaptation.
