Ethnic and Linguistic Conflicts in the Post-Soviet Space in the Online Communication: Typology and Functioning

The present study investigates linguistic and ethnic conflicts in the post-Soviet online communication specifically naturally-occurring in such social networks as VK, Facebook and YouTube. This research aims to describe functioning of linguistics conflicts in virtual communication and classify those conflicts. To facilitate this, a total of 10500 messages (comments)/102 dialogues published between 2019 and 2020 were obtained by selecting and subsequently scanning and examined. The data was analyzed to define conflictogenes and conflict triggers, forms, the dynamics and strategies the communicators use while arguing. The results indicate on resolution impossibility of linguistic conflicts due to nature of CMC. Internet users from post-Soviet countries also tend to code-switch when showing group identity and reluctance to use the Russian language. The typology of linguistic conflicts was provided based on the data analysis. The findings of this study can fill a gap in the under-studied area of linguistic conflicts in computer-based online communication. The present research provides a contribution to existing knowledge in the field of Sociolinguistics.
