The motivational mechanisms behind video game play have become an important topic of theoretical and empirical concentration. In the last decade, most scholars have adopted the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) approach as the most versatile and descriptive. However, the issue of game need frustration and its relation to video game enjoyment remains unresolved. Current research adopts an experimental study design to explore the role of levels of competence and autonomy in overall videogame enjoyment for players with various kinds of gaming experience. Results achieved show significant role of competence levels in achieving of overall game enjoyment, as well as an important interaction between the two variables. The outcomes of this study can be applied in creation of various player experiences in platformer PC-games.
