Peace through Games: Summer Olympics, Nationalism and Civil Conflicts

Student: Chakaberia Tsotne

Supervisor: Dmitry Dubrovsky

Faculty: Saint-Petersburg School of Social Sciences

Educational Programme: Comparative Politics of Eurasia (Master)

Year of Graduation: 2020

Nationalism, particularly inclusive nationalism, reduces the likelihood of civil conflicts. The Olympic Games can both act as a proxy to measure the level of nationalism and remain part of the process of peace. Studying the relationship between the Olympics and civil conflicts is important not only to the international sports arena but also to putting an end to or avoiding civil conflicts altogether. This relationship can serve as an alternative means of analysing civil conflict mediation, maintaining peace and enhancing country-specific development.
