The Migration Strategies of the Physician to Remote and Rural Areas (Based on the Example of Tver Region)

The paper describes strategies for migration of doctors to the periphery based on the analysis of the migration o in Tver-region. Based on the analysis of 13 biographical interviews with doctors who have moved to the periphery to work, as well as 7 expert interviews, the paper shows that the most popular strategy for moving to the periphery is return migration. The periphery is more in demand among doctors who have already experience the living or working on the periphery. Push-pull factors that determine the strategy of doctors’ migration align with the factors of migration to the periphery in general (family, personal, economic, environmental, etc.). Specific factors that determine the doctors’ migration are state programs support measures, higher demand in the peripheral labour market (rapid career growth and opportunities for professional experience), the ability to choose any locality according to personal preferences. Based on the interplay of these factors, 5 strategies were identified which turns out to be more or less typical for different socio-demographic groups.
