The Metaphoric Landscape of Aging and Old Age in Contemporary English

The paper is focused on metaphoric conceptualization of the ageing experience in contemporary English discourse. This research is aimed at examining metaphoric depictions of ageing and old age and identifying common themes in the way metaphors are used. Metaphor is instrumental in conceptualizing and verbalizing such complex phenomena of human life as ageing. This paper provides systematic characterization of metaphoric language used to describe ageing in contemporary English discourse. This research also traces the evolution of the concept of old age and public discourses of ageing and old age throughout the history since different social, political, economic and demographic factors can greatly influence public attitudes to ageing.
