An Oriental "Bey" or Muslim Philanthropist? The Trial of H.Z. Tagiyev and the Polemics on "Orientalia" in the Russian Central and Muslim Press (1910)

This paper analyses the trial on the famous Muslim patron H.Z. Taghiyev. In May 1911 jealous billionaire beat in his house young engineer Bebhudov. This case electrified society mostly because Taghiyev was engaged in trial as accused one. The main goal of this paper is to reveal the way both Muslim and Russian newspapers illustrated their attitude towards oriental population through this particular case. To reach this goal we use newspapers published in 1911-1912 as during this time the trial was taking place. This paper is divided into two chapters. The first one analyses the materials which supported the muslim patron while the second one, on the contrary, which blamed him.
