It has been proved that environmental problems can most effectively be handled by developing closed loop supply chains that can be defined as circular economy (CE). CE, in turn, is a tool of sustainability. While the debate over CE perspectives seems to gain popularity, many issues regarding its development in Russian companies remain unresolved and consequently stands up to closer examination. To assess opportunities concerning sustainable development that are currently available in Russia, legislative framework and existing market conditions were analyzed, business processes in Russian and foreign companies were reviewed on the topic of sustainability principles implementations. The results of the present research show that it is possible to apply CE principles in Russia as the business environment there is quite favorable for doing that. Thereby new useful insights into the topic of sustainable development in the form of recommendations for Russian companies were provided. Moreover, this study offers opportunities for further investigations. In future it seems appropriate to update information gathered to make it up to date as the business conditions are changing day by day.
