Representations of the North in Popular Magazines: a Comparative Analysis of the Late Imperial and Early Soviet Periods (the 1890s-1900s and the 1920s-1930s)

In the late imperial and early Soviet periods, interest to the Far North intensified in Russia. It was supported by the different types of publications in popular magazines. In recent years there has been an increasing interest to research how the image of the North affects on the relationships between Russian-speaking and indigenous population and on their identities. The aim of this study is to analyse how the representation of the Far North has changed within the specified period. The object is periodical publications concerned the theme of the Far North, and the subject is the image that is created using these publications. The first chapter explores the Far North representation in the period of 1890s-1900s, the second one that in USSR on the eve and shortly after the second International Polar Year. The third chapter identifies the aspects of the representations having undergone changes, and those that remained unchanged, and attempts to answer the question by what it could be caused
