Reading Practices of Russian Provincial Citizen in the First Quarter of the XX Century

In the following paper author tries to show cultural and social aspects of provincial Russian citizen in the beginning of the XXth century through reading experience. By analyzing diaries, libraries' accounts and literary critics' reviews we have come to conclusion that reading played a vital role in defining person's and social group's identity. Reading was a marker of being educated and well-behaved, thus dividing society and defining its structure anew. Overall, reading could be regarded as a striking feature of impending 'modernity' being a link between old and new world.
