Structural equation modeling was used to explore the direct and indirect associations of parental monitoring, emotional attachment and peer alcohol use on the alcohol behavior of adolescents who are students of vocational schools in St. Petersburg. Alcohol behavior of adolescents represents the frequency of alcohol consumption. Data were collected on 1299 adolescents and 1019 (78%) of them were used for the analysis. The structural model developed explained 26% of the variance for alcohol behavior. Peer alcohol behavior had the highest degree of association with alcohol behavior of adolescents (β = 0.46). Parental monitoring (from mother) had direct negative association with alcohol behavior (β = -0.17). Emotional attachment had indirect negative effect on alcohol behavior (β = -0.06) and monitoring served as a mediator. The direct effect of attachment on alcohol behavior was tested, but no confirmation was found. Attachment had a direct positive effect on monitoring variable (β = 0.34). Age and gender served as the control variables in the model. Structural model describes the network of factors that predict alcohol consumption of adolescents from vocational schools and as it seen from the model alcohol behavior of peer is the strongest predictor for alcohol behavior. The outcomes of the study also highlight the importance of parental monitoring and emotional attachment in preventing and decreasing alcohol consumption in adolescents.
