This thesis aimed to analyze the research activity of the group for ethnographic study of the collective farms of the Institute for Study of the Peoples of the USSR (Academy of Sciences of the USSR). This Institute was created simultaneously with the start of the process of the marxization of the ethnography through the active introduction of dialectical materialism. I consider studies of collective farms as a research experiment which was meant to create an applied ethnography. The key primary sources for my thesis are the minutes of the meetings of the collective farm research group from October 18, 1930 to May 23, 1932. In addition to minutes, I work with materials that were collected by ethnographers during their fieldwork, texts of their reports on the meetings, etc. These sources reflect different stages of ethnographic work and respectively different stages of production of ethnographic knowledge.
