The following research is dedicated to examination of the critical confrontation between theatrical and cinema periodicals in the context of cinema discussions, which took place from 1907 to 1919. The increasing tension between the old and the new medium, and the pressure to relieve that tension, found expression in a vigorous discourse about the relationship between theater and cinema - a relationship that has different dimensions. Early cinema was a controversial appearance that provoked discussions about its present and future development. The forums for this debate were the cinema-dedicated newspapers and journals of the 1907 and 1919. On a basis of discussions we can construct a perception of the phenomenon of cinema by contemporaries, to then place it in the sociocultural context of the beginning of the XXth century.
