Closed Yard: the Interconnections of Emotional Perception and Spatial Organization of Moscow Yards

This study examines the current issue of perception of the urban environment and behavioral responses. Yard space is an artificially created planning unit of urban space in which a person spends most of his time. The study describes the search for relationships with the main sources of emotions, as well as the determination of the main components of the overall perception of the yard space - the parameters that a person operates in the process of gaining experience in using the yard. The purpose of the study: to determine how closedness or openness as a characteristic of the spatial organization of the yard space affects the emotional perception of a person. The study conducted in-depth interviews with residents of Moscow yards. Data was also collected on the spatial organization of the courtyards of Moscow, the typification of courtyards was created according to building morphotypes and the planning structure of the courtyard space. The work consists of three chapters: the first chapter is devoted to the study of the theoretical foundations of the study of human emotions in an urban environment, the second chapter discusses various typologies of public spaces, and the yard as a public space, the third chapter includes an analysis of the data and research results. The study focused on identifying the basic emotional experiences of residents regarding the yard areas. As the results of the interview showed, closeness is caused by a sense of security, in general, emotions in a positive way, as well as aspects such as involvement in social life. You can call these two things - the main in the perception of the court. The relationship of closeness described by informants in interviews with security is one of the most important conclusions of this study. The parameters of security and diversity, the conditions under which space is open and accessible not for abstract everyone, but for its conditional ones, as well as the parameter of social control evoke positive emotions in a person, such as calm, security, joy and freedom.
