The phenomenon of subjective well-being (SWB) has provoked heated debates since the previous century. It is probably one of the most controversial issues, as for each individual, factors, contributing to the levels of SWB will be different. One of the determinants of SWB is marital status. The current paper focuses on status “Divorced” in particular, as divorce is a negative life event and the number of divorces has been increasing, what negatively influences SWB of people. The main question is whether governments can contribute to mitigation of negative effect of divorce by spending more money on education of citizens and stabilizing the level of gender inequality in a country? In order to examine the effect of divorce on SWB and governmental contribution, a multi-level regression model was constructed, which allowed to trace the impact from individual and country-level perspectives. The main finding was that the more government spends on education, the less negative effect divorce will have on SWB. Considering gender inequality, it was found that its level does not influence SWB through the prism of divorce. Overall, we can state that governments can contribute to the mitigation of effect of divorce on subjective well-being, spending more money on education, so that people could have the chance to live happier lives. Key words: subjective well-being, marital status, divorce, multi-level regression
