French Writers of the 19th Century on the Phenomenon of Dandyism

The purpose of the proposed research project is to examine the topic of dandyism as a cultural and philosophical phenomenon in the works of French authors in the 19th century. The main aim is to identify the similarities and differences of the image of dandy in the literary texts of the following writers: H. Balzac, J. A. Barbey d’Aurevilly, Ch. Baudelaire, J. K. Huysmans, R. Montesquieu. This study focuses on analysis, comparison and generalisation methods, in order to determine individual features of each author with a purpose to form a general context of the time and the phenomenon of dandyism in France in the 19th century. Keywords: European phenomenon of dandyism in 19th century, influence of romanticism, decadence, image of dandy, specifics of dandyism in the French literature, Ch. Baudelaire’s poetry.
