Pausing Strategies in Fast and Slow Reading in Russian

Student: Bakalina Aleksandra

Supervisor: Tatiana Sherstinova

Faculty: School of Arts and Humanities

Educational Programme: Philology (Bachelor)

Final Grade: 9

Year of Graduation: 2020

This paper presents two experiments the aim of which is to explore and describe various pausing strategies used by native speakers of Russian at different reading rates. The first experiment offers one sequence of reading rates, namely “normal”, “fast”, “maxim fast”, “slow”, while the second experiment offers a different sequence of reading rates, namely “normal”, “slow”, “fast”, “maxim fast”. The separation into two strategies was made in order to see whether the sequence would have a significant impact on the reading process. Apart from the question of whether speakers adhere to the same pausing strategies at different rates or not and their description, the question is raised whether the change in tempo depends more on the number and/or duration of pauses or on the articulation pace.
