Art historians are well aware of the outline of artists from the time of the Italian Renaissance to the present day. However, the preparatory of works of medieval masters is little known. This is not surprising, since a small number of preparatory images of that era have been preserved. They are sheets sewn into books. Researchers gave them the nominal name "sample books." Nominal, since over a century-long history of studying, art historians are not sure of their purpose. The purpose of this research is to show the variety of sample books and the presence of a large number of questions related to their study. The aim of the study is also the desire to create a universal list of criteria for the characterization of sample books, which will allow us to draw up an analysis scheme for these manuscripts. The main tasks of the work are to compile a classification, taking into account recent studies, study the manuscript on the basis of classification proposed, identify basic and little-studied issues. The main research problems related to books of samples were studied in the work and the fundamental features of the group of monuments, nominally defined as “books of samples”, were determined. Based on the analysis, the classification was proposed according to the main problems of study and the distinguishing features of manuscripts, and an algorithm for studying these manuscripts was composed, which, we hope, became an addition and development of existing classification options.
