The Specifics of the Translation of English-language Television Series Concerning Political Topics

This paper considers specific features of the translation of a multi-discursive political film series. Research distinguishes elements of political, entertainment, and audiovisual discourses within political film series. The subtitles in English and Russian for the first season of the American political drama “Boss” serve as the research material. This paper takes into account the technical features of such translation activity type as subtitling. The paper also analyses translation strategies which are expressed primarily in the use of different types of translation transformations that assist to convey the original meaning of a phrase in the target language. Translation modifications analysis for translating political metaphors is one of the main focuses of the research since political metaphor stands out as one of the key conceptual and rhetorical elements of political discourse. The accuracy and adequacy of the translation are evaluated based on the semantic context of a statement and compliance with the principles of translation equivalence.
