Small Book Formats in Russia at the end of the 18th Century: Authors', Editors' and Readers' Practices

The paper describes the books, which were printed in small formats such as twelvemo and sixteenmo in press houses of Moscow and Saint Petersburg during in 1770-1780 years. Using the comparative analysis, close reading of some concrete text of 18th century and some databases, the paper gives a detailed description of these format’s role in Russian typography, and characterize the publishes’, readers’, and writers’ tactics that is connected with this type of books. Comparison with a history of these formats and people’s tactics in Europe clearly shows that more factors influenced the choice of book format in Russia. Moreover, it can be said that the size of the book from an exclusively bibliographic description turns into characteristic that carries information about the author of the book and its contents.
