The master's thesis is devoted to the historical and literary context of "The House of the Dead" by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Its main purpose was to describe the literary and journal conventions on the penitentiary system and to show how the "The House of the Dead" relates to them. The focus of the thesis was the period of preparation of judicial reform from the first year of Alexander's rule (1855) to the year of publication of the final chapters of the first publication of "The House of the Dead" (1862).
