In this work I study the features of competition impact on the Russian banking sector stability. In particular, my goal is to identify the differences between ways how competition affects monopolized bank groups and how it affects competitive part of this market. In order to perform empirical analysis I used two samples, including ten largest Russian banks and ten banks standing at 91 - 100 lines of the rating based on the size of the assets of Russian banks. Both of these samples are analyzed according to two scenarios: the first one evaluates the model over 18 years from 2001 to 2018; the second one evaluates model at six time intervals separating the data affected by the global financial crisis that took part at 2008 – 2009 years and the Russian local crisis at 2014 – 2015 from the rest of the data array. The level of banking sector stability assessing model includes factors such as the stability of the bank in the previous year, individual characteristics of the bank, macroeconomic indicators, and a dummy variable that identifies crisis years in addition to competition variable. As a result of the analysis, I arrived to conflicting conclusions about the impact of competition on the stability of different groups of Russian banking sector.
