Christian Holidays in the Poetic World of Pasternak

Educational Programme: Philology (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2020

This study is devoted to reconstruct the position that Christianity occupied in Pasternak's ideas about art on the basis of an analysis of all the poet's poems, which somehow mark the holiday time. We tried, on the one hand, to identify and describe the place that holidays occupy in the structure of each specific text, and, on the other, to formulate the general functional meaning of holidays in the poetic world of Pasternak. In this way, we hoped to highlight the evolution that the Christian component is undergoing along with the poet's worldview. As a result, we came to the conclusion that all the functions that the holidays have in the poetic world of Pasternak are not so much a consequence of general cultural attitudes, but rather of the peculiarities of the poet's perception of the world, his creative aesthetics: holidays mark a direct connection between the "force" that shifts reality and the Bible as its primary source. Thus, holidays are one of the most important ways to realize Pasternak's deep idea about art, to show that it always narrates about its own birth.
