The Efficiency Factors of the Supervisor in Russian Universities: Problems and Prospects of Development

Тhe relationship between the PhD supervisor and the PhD student is a complex one. When this relationship is neither effective nor efficient, it may yield negative consequences, such as academic failure. Currently, the level of protection among graduate students is falling. At the same time, the need for innovative development of the economy and increasing global competitiveness in the high-tech manufacturing sector requires increasing the effectiveness of postgraduate training and reducing the time for graduation, since postgraduate study is the main resource for training highly qualified personnel. In this work, a comprehensive analysis of the scientific literature on the research topic will be carried out, as a result of which we propose a generalized model of the relationship between various aspects of scientific leadership and the effectiveness of graduate studies, and also apply the proposed model to the study of the scientific management of graduate students at Russian universities. The empirical base of the study was a series of interviews with graduate students and supervisors, as well as surveys of graduate students and supervisors at leading Russian universities.
